A season without a trophy comes as a major shock for Manchester United fans and inevitably there will be inquests as to what went wrong. But let's not listen to tales of failure because this was a Championship won by Arsenal, not lost by United.
The Gunners have been the best team as the statistics spell out loud and clear. They didn't lose an away game and in fact had only three defeats all season. Compare this with United's record of losing eight times in the Premiership, five of them at home, and you can see the difference...
As Phil Neville said after the 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford which saw Arsenal claim the crown the Reds have worn for three years: "We dug in from December, and though it wasn't enough to win the title, we played some good football and got back into it. If anyone had said that we would recover like that they wouldn't have been believed.
"We know we have let the fans down and we are sorry we have not won anything. Tonight was our sixth home defeat and we have not lost as many as that on our own ground for twelve years. Old Trafford used to be a fortress and that's what we have got to get back to."
United tried hard enough on the night but it was an emotional performance without the poise and confidence which filled the FA Cup winners as they went on to claim a League and FA Cup double thanks to a great goal scored by Sylvain Wiltord after 56 minutes.
Sir Alex Ferguson conceded afterwards: "Once we had lost the goal we didn't look as if we could win it. Over the season Arsenal were the better team. Losing six games at home is not good enough and we are aware of that."
United's immediate task is to pip Liverpool for the runners-up place and so avoid having to play in next season's qualifying round for the Champions League. Liverpool lie second after beating Blackburn 4-3 which means United must beat Charlton at Old Trafford on Saturday while hoping Liverpool lose their final fixture.
As Ferguson admits: "It's a worry and it's looking dodgy." (RB's note: Man United even failed in this simple task!)
So it might be, but it's still no reason to talk of failure. It is Arsenal's turn for the Championship. They have had a super season and they took the title for the double with style. Let's be fair!
