Nurburgring 2001...where it all started

I have just been to the Nurburgring with the boys for the Easter weekend.  I don't have a great need for speed myself but though it would be fun to go and see the sights of Germany, watch some beautiful cars and bikes and of course sample the legendary beers.  (NB - click on all photos to view a bigger version)

If you want to read about the Nurburgring, a brief bit about its history and relive a lap in a fast Honda then please click here.  If you want to view a map of its famous 22km + course then click here

So, Thursday morning saw me clambering into a Caterham 7 belonging to Charlie.

Charlie, Richard and the Caterham 7

What a car! Based on the famous Lotus 7 designed by Colin Chapman this car is a beast.  It weighs virtually nothing and yet has a tasty engine tucked away under its bonnet.  We took off (almost literally) for Dover and the ferry to Calais.  From there we drove through France, Belgium, and into Germany.

We were in a convoy with Jake and Matt who were doing their bit to play the part of wolves in sheeps' clothing.  They were driving a Vito van but in the back were two of the latest Honda Fireblades.  Not content with this array of machinery we were soon joined by Mark who was riding his Suzuki Hayabusa.  What a bike.  I want one.  But it scares me.  'Nuff said.

When we got to Germany we had a quick look at the Ring, then found our B&B which was in a beautiful town called Herschbroich.  Herschbroich and two other towns are inside the race track itself (if you look at the map of the track you will see Herschbroich marked.)  Its that big.

My first ever sit on a motorbike...

Having 'wetted my whistle' in 2001, and unbeknown to me at that time, I was to return on my own sportsbike just two and a half years later.  See that trip here.
